Improving Patient Communication Through Active Listening

Type: A Vyond-based eLearning module that teaches active listening techniques to improve patient communication and support positive healthcare interactions.

Tools: Vyond

Context: Effective patient communication requires more than providing information. Healthcare professionals must also listen carefully to patient concerns, confirm understanding, and respond with empathy. This training was designed to help learners develop active listening skills that build trust, reduce misunderstandings, and improve the patient experience.

Audience: Healthcare professionals, audiology staff, medical assistants, or other patient-facing employees who regularly communicate with patients.

My Role: I served as the instructional designer and developer for this project, including defining learning objectives, writing the script, developing realistic patient scenarios, creating storyboard content, and producing the final animated Vyond module.

Solution: I designed a scenario-based eLearning experience that teaches learners how to:

  • Demonstrate active listening behaviors during patient conversations

  • Use verbal and nonverbal techniques to show engagement and understanding

  • Confirm patient concerns through paraphrasing and clarifying questions

  • Build rapport and trust through empathetic communication

The training uses animated scenarios to model effective and ineffective communication techniques, allowing learners to observe the impact of active listening on patient interactions.

Impact: This training helps learners improve communication quality, strengthen patient relationships, and create more positive healthcare experiences through intentional listening behaviors.

Reflection: This project strengthened my ability to design scenario-based learning that focuses on interpersonal skills rather than technical knowledge. It also reinforced the importance of using realistic conversations and relatable situations to help learners apply communication techniques in real-world settings.
